Church Pillars

1. Expository Preaching

At Heritage we believe that the Word of God is verbally inspired (2 Timothy 3:16), absolutely inerrant in the original documents, infallible, and God-breathed. Because of our high view of Scripture, we are committed to the proclamation of Scripture in a way that is expository in nature.

What is Expository Preaching? Expository preaching is a form of preaching that explains the meaning of a particular text or passage of Scripture. The goal of expository preaching is to faithfully speak the intended meaning of a particular passage based on the context using a literary, historical, grammatical approach to interpreting Scripture. We believe that the Church is best served & God is most glorified through this method of preaching. (see Al Mohler's defense of expository preaching)

Expository preaching is the first pillar and is far and away the most important, because if you get this one right, all of the others should follow.

2. Biblical Theology

Theology is simply the study of God. One of the greatest deficiencies of the church today is not fully knowing and understanding who God truly is as revealed in His Word. Many have pieced together their own thoughts about God rather than listening to what the Bible says about the nature of God. The following five statements are crucial in understanding God correctly.

  • God is a creating God. God is the initiator of all things. In the beginning He created everything that existed out of nothing in six literal days. God created mankind in His own image. Furthermore, God elected a specific people to be His own through the promise He made to Abraham. This is how Scripture portrays God. We may not fully understand it, but it is hard to deny that God creates and God elects. Understanding these truths about God should help us to understand ourselves. We must acknowledge that God is the great initiator, the great giver, the great creator of the world, the great creator of His people, the author of our faith. This is what God is like.
  • God is a holy God. Most central to the character of God is His holiness. Unlike what many think in the world today, God is not indifferent to sin. God hates sin. On the contrary, all of mankind is sinful (1 Kings 8:46, Ps 14:3, Rom 3:23).
  • God is a faithful God.
  • God is a loving God.
  • God is a sovereign God.
